Maximising oil recovery from maturing oil fields

August 3, 2013

Dateline 2013-07-05, Sin Chew:

Malaysia is set to enhance its crude oil recovery from its maturing oil fields through the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology using its own expertise in petroleum engineering.

Works are already underway to implement EOR at the Tapis oil field located about 200 kilometres off Terengganu that produces extra-light and low-sulphur crude oil.

Tapis is one of seven mature offshore fields that ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. (EMEPMI) and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) have agreed to develop as part of a 25-year production-sharing contract that was finalized in 2009.

The EOR is a major engineering milestone for the country as local companies like SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd and Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (MMHE) are involved in fabricating the jacket and deck respectively.

Malaysia’s ambitious plan to transform its economy

May 1, 2012

Dateline 2012-04-28, and I’m being paid too low…

The government of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak launched the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) in September 2010 with the ambitious goal of doubling income per person to $15,000 to reach developed-nation status by 2020.

The ETP aims to consolidate Malaysia’s oil and gas (O&G) offshore fabricators to become more competitive regionally. OSK said this could benefit Kencana Petroleum Bhd (>> Kencana Petroleum Berhad) and Malaysia Marine of Heavy Engineering Bhd (>> Malaysia Marine & Heavy Engnrg Sdn Bhd), the remaining two listed larger fabricators. Offshore services firms such as Bumi Armada (>> Bumi Armada Bhd) are seen gaining from investments in the energy sector.

EMEPMI chairman and president, Hugh W Thompson said the contract was part of the company’s long-term commitment to work closely with PETRONAS and their co-venture partner PETRONAS Carigali to develop Malaysia’s full energy potential.”

Business Times – MISC subsidiary closes nearly 25% up on debut

October 31, 2010

Dateline 2010-10-30:

MALAYSIAN Marine & Heavy Engineering Holdings (MMHE) made an impressive debut on the stock exchange yesterday, rewarding retail subscribers of its shares with a hefty gain of almost 25 per cent.

Given the company’s stellar first-day performance, investor interest in the impending listing of Petronas Chemicals Group – the next Petronas unit slated to float its shares this year in Malaysia’s biggest IPO offering – is bound to be magnified.

Retail and institutional investors had subscribed for MMHE’s public offer at RM3.61 (S$1.50) and RM3.80 per share respectively. The closing price yesterday was RM4.51.

From Bernama – Technip May Acquire Up To 9.9% Stake In MISC Unit

August 22, 2010

From Bernama, dateline 2010-08-20:

French oil services company, Technip SA, may take up to 9.9 per cent stake in MISC Bhd’s unit, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (MHB), which is en route for a listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, MISC said it has signed binding term sheet with Technip in relation to the strategic investment.

“Technip may take up 128 million units, or a maximum of 158.4 million ordinary shares of 50-sen each, in MHB. The quantum of shares will represent between eight and 9.9 per cent stake,” it said.

From the Edge – PETRONAS to list two entities

April 13, 2010

Of course, we didn’t expect PETRONAS to list any of their star entities. My comments: Can someone tell me if  MMHE is the preferred fabricator of choice, esp for deep water structures? As for the Petrochemical entity, I expect profits to drop once PETRONAS Gas goes ahead and finds the guts to revise gas prices.

Now, if they listed PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, Putrajaya Holdings, PETRONAS NGV, Institute Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS, these would be game changers.

Dateline 2010-04-09:

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed listing of Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (Petronas) petroleum chemicals business and its heavy engineering arm will bring about a potential rerating of O&G supporting companies, says OSK Research.

The research house said on Friday, April 9 that currently, the O&G sector is trading at an attractive average PER of 13x FY10 EPS and 11x FY11 EPS.

“We believe that if Petronas floats these 2 businesses at a higher PER valuation, this would bring about a potential rerating of O&G supporting companies, some of which are still trading at single digit valuations due to the nature of their business and the lack of excitement in the sector,” OSK Research added.
