And now, Wata is the Managing Director of Synergy Oil and Gas Engineering SB, with projects around Asia Pacific region.

    • Wan Says:

      Managing Director asking for Donations?

      • Wata Says:

wan: everything has value. And it would be nice to have a self sustaining blog site. There is some cost in keeping this discussion center alive. And need to prevent jabba from breaking my legs.

      • Wan Says:

        Wata,

I need your opinion on this situation,

I have a friend who likes to buy a car, and
I know a few good car dealers.

What I normally recommend to my friend is
the same things a car dealer will give to
him or maybe extra (no mark up at all!).

The car dealer normally will give me the “introduction fee/ commission”,
for introducing the new customer to
        the company.

My question is whether the same arrangement
        can be adapt by Synergy?
Is there any misconduct you foresee?

      • Wata Says:

Wan: nope, no misconduct I can see.

      • alan morrice Says:

        Wata,

Remember Alan Morrice and the dream team of expats – the two Ted’s, Brian, Forbes etc worked in Malaysia from 2005 – 2007 Bunga Raya project great days, very nice people at City Bank say hi to all the boys out there. Like your web page, are expats still welcome back??

  2. hafiez Says:

    hello there Wata..
Just happen to found your blog while searching for oil and gas company in malaysia.
While reading the articile in your blog, I think, it would be great to have your blog address in my favorites list. You just make a very useful blog for others who willing to get a job and looking for job vacancy.
I just finished my studies and struggling to get my self employed and I had dream to work in the oil and gas industries since I was in primary school. Your blog is so helpful and really have a lot of information and somes are quite rare. I will spread it to all my friends.
    thanks for everything.

    -hafiez-

    • Wata Says:

hafiez: glad to hear that you are interested in my blog. Hope you stick around for a long time to come, I know I plan to :) .

  3. Jabbathehutt Says:

Primary school? I don’t even know what offshore work was abbout.

Primary school dream for Jabba was as follows:

    1. Becoming a prefect to intimidate others
    2. BMX bicycle
    3. Don’t need homework.

I’m amaze kids already want to be an offshore engineer since primary school. I was only wanting to be a police, so I can shoot my teacher and collect bribe.

    • Nabil Says:

haha..I just read this comment..but, indeed..I am also amazed with hafiez. He already have his target in life at a very young age. But I think I just like you. Might be slightly better than Jabbar because I have never intended to shoot my teacher..haha..Jokes a side, I think it is now the time we shall educate our children at very young age. I found most of us still searching for their goal when they were already at Universities. We shall educate them at early age so that they will have a clear directions to go in their life. Life is not how good you are…Is all about how good you wanna be..

      • pika Says:

        nabil :
        talking about school..
        i like your quotes..
” ife is not how good you are…Is all about how good you wanna be..”

The famous quotes from my teacher during school and i guess the quotes was his trademark until today.

p/s : Hope to be a successful petroleum engineer one day..
        :)

  4. Maiel Says:

    Hello Sir..
I came across your site when i look for subject on professional interview report for IEM. You have a good input here and interesting industry O&G. Wish i can join the industry as it is my passion before i proceed to my Mech Eng 18 years ago. But now im stuck in this Construction Industry and maintenance building.. what a luck …God didnt reply my pray…
Keep up your good work n thanxs.

    From Ismail of Kuching.

  5. Rio Nardo Says:

May i have ur email Mr Wata?
    TQ

  6. biztoone Says:

    sir
can u also publish work for the junior geologist in this oil n gas sector
im looking for it bcoz i will b grad soon
    thanks ya

    • Wata Says:

Biztoone, go do some job hunting homework. I publish jobs that are interesting to me unless someone wants pay me to make this my full time job. You are better off finding the names of O&G companies, and seeing what they offer.

  7. Faryd Says:

Wata..do you know which company required Junior Corrosion Engineer..I am very interested to apply for that position even i had settled my degree last 1 and a half year

  8. Wata Says:

Faryd: apply to fabricators or operating companies. Don’t expect 1.5 years since you graduated to count for your degree. This is currently a buyers market. Hey, I’m all for paying my engineers a pile of salt.

  9. christopher Says:

    Wata,

I stumbled upon your blog while doing research on Cathodic Protection(Corrosion in general) in the O&G sector, in a South East Asian/Malaysian context. There is a lack of sites/research on this locally. I would like to get in touch with Corrosion/MCI engineers, consultants etc to ask them about the issues/problems they’re currently facing in their jobs. You have fantastic experience in this industry, maybe you could point me to an expert, or give suggestions towards areas that I could focus on.

Some of the general areas of interest are:
Design&installation of CP systems, Monitoring, Inspection, Maintenance, New Developments/Technology, Regulatory Standards.

Be great if you could elaborate/give suggestions on areas to focus on. (eg Design – SACP/ICPP systems etc)

    • Wata Says:

Christopher: I would get in touch with the IEM, and ask them if they can recommend people. Maybe ask the public affairs department of the various operating companies. I would need to know a lot more about your work before I approach people personally to get them to assist you.

  10. Abdullah Baihaqi Says:

    Dear Mr.Watta,

I’m final year final semester student of University Teknologi PETRONAS,taking Chemical Engineering,Major in Process Plant Engineering..Is there any vacancy in your company for an entry level position or any contact which suits for my job?I’m looking for job as Offshore/Onshore Process engineer..Please advise..Tq

  11. Fadzli Says:

1.Why UTP student must go to offshore/onshore stream?or Bumis must go to SPA/govern. servant?I wonder what happened to oil and gas industries job market if there have “University Teknology Shell or Exxon” .For entry level,is better not too fussy about jobs and salary….unless you got ’something” to offer like experiences rather than my parent working at Petronas too or Hassan Marican is my boyfriend.
2.Jobless very critical and the question “suits for my job” not reflect the real economy situation..just grabbed what in front of you first. If not,I will take it and give to Bangladesh guys.
3.TQ..and let Mr Watta comments. The real guy in oil and gas.

  12. fasyi Says:

    1. In the current economic pinch, graduates like myself are trying all options and routes, as means to secure jobs. Rather than question why UTP students must go to offshore/onshore, the question i would seem fitter is, WHY NOT go offshore/onshore? If there is a place for fresh graduates, it would only be fitting for us to try and grab it.
True, being fresh graduates, we do not have experience to offer. We offer only our technical capabilities and aptitude, and a young mind to shape. I am sure there are companies out there seeking new young talent, experience aside.

P.S: To clear the misconception I commonly encounter. Not all UTP students have relatives working in PETRONAS. Most are in UTP by their own merit. For admissions into UTP, students must have good prior academic record, and must pass an extensive 3 day interview process.

    2. I am soon to be graduates (sensible ones) already have that set in mind. Grab opportunities when they come, as they come.

    3. your welcome.

  13. aainaa Says:

    assalamualaikum

    sir,

tomorrow i’ll have an interview at ur company.i appreciate if u can advise and give me some tips for the intview..;)

  14. Fadzli Says:

No newborn can directly “walk” and grapped the “lolipop” without “teeth”..and lolipop are very limited nowadays..and the teeth…its take times.

2.I know ,familiar and understood the intake procedure of UTP and Petronas HRM..I had attended interview already..both of it.Just to share my experience..I’m batch of AAD programme…MCC Kuantan..product of MJSC..MARA promised us to sent to US but in that particular year …economy crash and down in Asia region..”janji tinggal janji” even we got a good cgpa every sem..So,what they do?..they sent us (almost all of our batch ) to GLC’s university including UTP,Uniten and MMU via transfer credits programmes sponsored by MARA or JPA…many of your super dupper tripple senior at UTP are my friends..we cry and had joy together.

    3. Sometime, study hard, qualification and where you come from not guarantee to get a good job and money even you care..It about opportunity, istiqammah (cont. improment/kaizen) , risk and survival.

    4. For me, statement “WHY NOT go to offshore/onshore” means we limited the options and chances..block the mind..but good as objective, motivation and target while in university..I prefer WHY NOT to X industry,Y research or Z business..Still had a chance especially final year students while in university to discover all elements of XYZ but when in a real working environment, the situation are different..

    5. Your situation same with me,the only different for me..it happened almost 10 yrs ago when I graduate and start hunting a job..I’m not misconcept since from my experience almost of UTPs,Unitiens and MMU think glc will take them/or had cable inside and I so worry that my brothers/juniors feel they are all in comfort zone. That’s the point..Not only education but all aspect in social, politics and business.

    6. This blog dedicated as added knowledge and info for blogger, experience sharing ,question and answer and guidelines in oil and gas industries lead by professional people… but it not the ultimate solution or another jobstreet for o&g jobseekers.

7.For aainaa..good luck..speak clear, confident and be honest..they want to see the aspects that can not be found in cv…

    thank you..I’m still learning guy.

  15. Jabbathehutt Says:

I am back from the snowy mountains.

First Ainaa, the advice is wear a short skirt, and wink a lot. Jabba will use his powers to persuade wata to get you a job.

    Back to my abusing mood…..

    There are only max 150 jobs open to graduates where their engineering skills are truly used. This includes ;

    1. Engineering consultants (doing design, operations etc).
    2. Operators

Other work like selling valves, bolts and nuts don’t count. Think that you also need to compete with at least 5000 foreign university graduates many which are 1st class honor students.

Its an employer market. I guess what I am saying is you need to try hard, and probably jump on the slightest chances, and not asking wata for his email and expect synergy to offer a job just because u ask on his blog.

Jabba’s slaves need to mow lawn and align my satelite dish every week just to keep employed.

  16. indera Says:

    hallo En.Wata..

  17. astanna Says:

    hi..mr wata
    nice to know you.
i’m taking chemical engineering also and supposedly graduate next year. Can i have your comments regarding the performance of fresh graduate nowadays. My lecturer has complained about our seniors performance when they went for industrial internship. They not able to apply what they have learn. Is it a normal case for a beginner or is it a signs that we have to put a lot more afford on it. thanx for ur advice

    • Wata Says:

astanna: good comment. Of the interns I had the pleasure to observe, all of the ones my employers’ chose could apply their knowledge to the problems at hand. Personally, I don’t expect a lot from interns, except an ability to look up applicable equations and data in books (blind citing from the Internet deserves a shout that can be heard across the office) and be able to write passable English (or even passable BM). New hires are a different ball game.

  18. hendra harjuna Says:

    Hi Wata,

I read in one of your articles about Petronas doing test pilot on EOR.

Well,I happen to be managing a Regional MAsterClass with Shell Netherlands EOR Expert with 30 years of experience in EOR. He was the Head Of Shell ENP Research team there.

Do you know anyone whom might be interested in this program? Its goin to be held sometime in June 09 titled Ultimate Oil Recovery focussing on the latest techniques on EOR. I do have the program details with me if you keen to know more. drop me an email at hendra.harjuna@hotmail.com

  19. hendra harjuna Says:

oh and yah.. its going to held in Park Royal Hotel.

  20. Jabbathehutt Says:

    Astana,

Graduate nowadays cannot think independently/logically. They get 1st class honours by blindly doing tutorial. If I ask them to design a vessel in the shape of a cube, they go,…. “boss, what equation ah?”

I would expect, “Why do you want to do that”

    Enough said.

  21. Nick Says:

Can I have ur email pls. Thank you.

  22. astanna Says:

thanx mr wata and mr jabba for your comments..wondering hows my life will be on my first day of working as chemical engineering..hopefully it won’t be a disaster..i’m sure we should double up our afford to meet the expectation..

  23. Zaim Says:

    Hello Mr Wata,
Nice blog and thank you for information about job vacancy in your blog. I just wanna get your opinion whether economy drop now will effect the oil & gas job.

  24. Jabbathehutt Says:

No more oil and gas job. the best part is, they want RM3000. Let me tell you, you’re lucky if you get RM1500

    • Miss IndependenT Says:

Nway,Daer Mr Wata, ur blog is real nice..fall in love at first sight!!!. MUST let my frens know about this blog of urs.

      p/s: not a B.Eng grad.

      • Wata Says:

Miss IndependenT: I hope that they are paying you 1.5kRM, not 1.5RM. I’d struggle as well.

      • Miss IndependenT Says:

      • Jabbathehutt Says:

I like your attitude in life. i think you’ll go far.

I wish you having a more sucessful 2010. I’d hire an engineer with an attitude like you.

      • Miss IndependenT Says:

        Q’s to mr jabba,

      • Wata Says:

Hahahahah. Jebat the Hutt… that’s serious revisionist history.

  25. Ibrahim HMS Says:

    Salam.
Boss, what do you think the best way to ‘accelerate’ government servants to work better at the same time produces better services to the community? I am wondering what is the used of phone number included with the staff name of any department in government but when called never answered. sometime, if answered, keep passing everywhere without end? How about if we have to go to the same department continously more than 3 or 4 time but still they mentioned “the documents is not complete”. the problem is, each time we went there, they only mention only one thing that not complete or wrong. why don’t they checked carefully and tell us all the missing in once so we can prepared all the requirement completely in once also.
Your blog gave me an idea to create one too. Here is mine: http://yemcarlo.blogspot.com/ . Please visit and comment about the site and drop any ideas or feedbck of my Economic Downturn’s Post. Hope you may help me to improve the blog. Wassalam…

    hello!

firstly, i would like 2 ask more information about diver job…can u give me your own opinion n advice for working in this sector…please kindly reply 2 my email add..TQ for ur cooperation! =)

mohd farhan: If you want to be a commercial diver, you have to ask someone else, preferably someone working on offshore installation and maintenance.

  31. heikal Says:

it is wonderful for me to be able to get in touch with wata

  32. nikeblaze Says:

    Hi Wata,

Reading thru the responses you have given, it looks I can summarize 2 things (however, I don’t judge people):

    a. donation to ur blog is one gateway to be on your list,as there is no such thing as a free lunch.

    b. ur euphemism is strikingly profound, if not subtle (lol)

by the way, need some information on the vacancy at petrofac in which u have posted in ur entry. do u know are they still looking for it? i looked up in their website, but can’t find it anywhere.

appreciate it if you can respond to this.

    good looking out bro.

    • Wata Says:

nikeblaze: I don’t keep track of whether openings are available after I put them on my site. Rule of thumb: they should be available for one week past publication date. And I believe that if you are serious in getting a job, you should put a value on getting a leg up. That tends to stop the ‘I want job, you owe me 1 while I cont surf. thx’ crowd. If you’re good, I might recommend you for free.

      • nikeblaze Says:

        hi wata,

thanks for the heads up for putting some emphasis having a straight vertebrae when looking out for a job. and yes, i am dead serious.

well the way i see it (being a bit philosophical), in this ephemeral life one perpetually depends on others in getting new informations that will help them make ends meet. and as cliche as it sounds, it is true after all. but amidst of that, there are typically tradeoff’s in which one is expected to give some in order to receive some. with all due respect wata, what about you? i hope that by me further commenting to your on ur blog, does not push you to the corner without gloves. well, i still have the paypal option if that ever happens. lol.

p/s: i notice that we got a hater in the hse, is it? lol.

good looking out bro. appreciate it.

  33. jabbathehutt Says:

wata is sick when he says he is going to recommend for free.

please donate to his paypal to cure him.

  34. Lenzs Says:

    Hello mr wata

The only one petroleum lubricant I know is KY Jelly.

  36. Zulkifly Says:

  37. Aim Says:

please catch the opportunity in Palm oil Mill

  38. Jabbathehutt Says:

i luckily did not started in palm oil.

my last salary is 10 times yours.

    • YobDaud Says:

Wallla Jabba… rezki di Tangan Tuhan.. bersyukur lah dengan ape yg ko ada. Dont count how much money you have or you gain in oil & gas. Those people in oil & gas their life sytle is ‘teruk’. Arroyo is their taste at site or else they go down to Jakarta to get young amoi. Most of the people in oil& gas industries when they go travelling all over the world, they will look for the local taste…. mmm nyummy nyummy. Actually, when you get high pay, you will get woman waiting for you.. haram di halalkan. This is the side story of being O&G personnel.

      • Wata Says:

YobDaud: you know that you just metioned everyone in Synergy? And me just coming back from Jakarta on Friday… I guess I forgot to bring back some ‘local taste,’ though the alpukat and masakan manado was good. And garlic peanuts are excellent. I assume you don’t want to work in oil & gas?

      • Nabil Says:

Salam bro, you can’t directly point like that..It is not the fault of Oil and Gas industry…or because of your high salary..I is about yourself bro. If you know what is your actual goal in your life and life after death, no matter how much money you got, you will know the limit for your life. This lifestyle also being applied quite widely at our government agencies, palm oil industry, shipping industry..its everywhere now. So we must be extremely careful and understand the real objectives being born to this world. Salam

  39. Jabbathehutt Says:

oh, by the way, shouting for support in palm oil industry on an oil and gas site….

its like wearing an Aerosmith T-shirt to a Rolling Stones concert….. feeling suicidal?

  40. mohd amri bin mohamed khairi Says:

    dear mr.wata
I am fresh graduate from universiti teknikal malaysia melaka (UTeM). I very interested to join O&G as engineer or any field related to my qualification. for your information i have a degree in Mechanical major in Design and innovation. Plz give me some advise and how to join O&G. Can i give u my resume for any vacancies…

    • Wata Says:

Amri: Give me your CV together with a donation, and I’ll see what I can do. Alternatively, have you submitted your CV directly to O&G companies? There’s a whole list of companies on this blog. Much cheaper, too.

  41. Ahad Says:

    Dear Mr Watta,

CAn I also send my CV to you? Also same matters as Amri..Nowadays its more difficult to get a fresh grads engineers job as more companies start to freeze application for anentry-level…please advise sir..

    Little bit about myself:

I’m graduate from University of Technology PETRONAS (UTP) taking degree in Chemical Engineering and Major in Process Engineering..I have demonstrated strong academic performances and managed to attain good academic standings, obtaining the Dean’s List Award for six semesters and current CGPA standing of 3.72 out of 4.00.

In 2008, I was selected to an 8-month internship training in ExxonMobil Port Dickson Refinery Bhd. an Oil and Gas company located in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia attached to Process Department.

I’m a fast learner and can work under pressure.I’m looking forward to have a job opportunity in oil and gas company and further contributed towards the organization success.

    and another question..urmm..how I can donate to your blog?sorry as i’m newbie..(^_^)..

    • Wata Says:

Ahad: free advice, apply to PETRONAS. I assume they’ll take you as soon as look at you. For others, keep on looking at the papers.
Hmmm, if you can’t figure out how to donate to my blog, I’d worry on your observation skills. If this was an interview, you have started out on the wrong foot.

  42. mohd amri bin mohamed khairi Says:

I am going to say this very clearly, although many people may not like to hear it. These people are IDIOTS for not even paying a bit of attention.

Wata has posted his info on this post. Some guy even manage to use the info here to track him down in person. If you can’t find out his email, your too stupid to work in O&G! Hopefully, donating to his blog may earn you another chance……

Anyway, that’s all the clue i’ll give.

hahahhaaaa, you’re right wata, they started with the wrong foot…. or wrong brains…..

  48. eker Says:

    dear wata,

been browsing the web to find info roadmap to PEng.

since u are active with IEM (and i don’t know anyone else to ask), do IEM still have the policy the degree you have decides which PEng exam we take? i.e. i’m registered under Elec.Eng. but working in Inst.&Cont.

last time i heard it was i have to take an exam to convert to what i want to register under.

ps: iem website should have an faq on this. or did i miss it?

    tq

    • Wata Says:

ekar: It’s not the IEM that decides the PE field that you can register as, it’s the BEM. And they still follow the degree that you obtained, rather than the career you currently pursue.
The ‘conversion exam’ is mainly for persons who have taken a degree course that is not recognised by the BEM or LAN (Lembaga Akreditasi Negara). You’ll have to make your own enquiries.

      • Fadzli Says:

        Dear mr wata
In year 2005,I registered as graduated eng. in mechnical at the moment I’m working at consultance (UPV and steam boiler),Then I resigned and joint other company in safety, fire & explosion..mr wata..I need your advice…need I to re-registed as graude engineer in new scope of work (safety,fire&explosion)?..or any “conversion” procedure by BEM? Thank you..

  49. Caboodels Says:

    Hi Wata,

First of all, what an impressive and informative website. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

I would just like to ask a simple question. I have a degree in Electrical & Electronics (from University Teknologi PETRONAS), and I majored in Computer Systems Engineering (minor: communication) and my question is: What are the chances of people with my qualifications in joinning the oil and gas industry? Thank you for your time.

    • Wata Says:

caboodels: your chances are the same as anyone else’s.

      • Jabbathehhutt Says:

probably less, you can neither be an electrical engineer or a communication engineer (specialist).

less : keep degree general, because the more specific, the worst it is.

    • shin_chan Says:

for oilfield work can try halliburton, schlumberger(SLB),Baker Hughes, weatherford.pure communication eng work SLB also got plus petrotel, nera. scope of work for EE in oilfield or O&G comm..google-lah or low yat forum also can one – good forum for freshies IMHO.

  52. copyninja Says:

something about job/vacancies/recruitment. i need your advice, its a long story.

im a petronas scholar. potential candidate for job placement. but after 5 months petronas still didnt offer me any job. i wanna explore other opportunities/options but i dont know which company to apply and what should i do. thats why i need someone like you to advice me.

    thanks.

    Amir
    cheme_pet@yahoo.com

    • Wata Says:

      copyninja: short answers:
      1. it’s a recession, grab any job that can conceivably match your ultimate career interest/aim.
      2. Look at recruitment ads in papers.
      3. Use your university career center.
      4. When submitting a written application, write coherently and correctly. I personally don’t care what language you write in, as long as it’s above Form 3 expectations. Anything less than that, straight to bin, shows lack of motivation.
      5. Research the company you are applying to. I&E applications for Chem Eng jobs, I label thee as a tree killer. ‘Any job’ letter subject, I label thee as a tree killer.

  53. paper_karma Says:

    Hi Wata,

nice blog u have here. is there any vacancy for fresh mechanical engineer? im a graduate with CGPA 3.8 desperate for a job. Hope u can reply to my email

  54. miss_curious Says:

Hi Wata, do you think an electrical and electronic’s graduate can cope if she or he would like to pursue a masters in petroleum engineering? and what masters are relevant to oil and gas in the future? i did do my own research of course (i read that petroleum and geoscience engineering is a hot course required by this industry nowadays), but I would like your view in this as well. Thank you for your time…

    • Wata Says:

miss_curious: I know of a lady whose an electronics graduate, but thriving well in reservoir engineering. Whether you can survive a geophysicist engineering course, that’s up to you.

  55. Ochibi Says:

    Hi Wata,

I would like to say great blog u have here and even greater of u to help out fellow “newbies” in this oil and gas field. I, like other “newbies” have only 3years+ experience in this industry.

Currently working for an international valve company as a valve project management engineer. I would like to venture more into total project engineering/management for the “whole” process. Although I am project management engineer, I only covers managing valves and control systems only. I would like to expand my knowledge/experience.

Actually I am looking for junior project engineer/piping/subsea position for any end users (eg. Exxon, Murphy and etc).

Hope u are able to help out and any advice would be much appreciated. Btw, I had tried to apply many companies but to no avail.

    Millions of thanks.

    • Jabbathehutt Says:

      people need workers, not managers….

      • Ochibi Says:

Jabbathehutt: I think u have view the matter on the wrong side. I am not aiming to be a manager for now or anytime soon. This is not my intention at all.

My aim is to explore into areas where project managemet is. That is why I do not mind starting fresh as long it has relevance and job satisfation. I fairly know 3+ years experience is nothing but all of us needs to start somewhere. If we are not given the chance to prove ourselves then the industry gap will be more significant in years to come.

Wata: thanks for your advice. I am not being picky but those menioned are just my future targetted company that I am aiming for in future. Thanks once again.

    • Wata Says:

Ochibi: 3 years as a PM manager doesn’t contribute a lot to your technical base. Best I can say is, look for companies specifically hiring fresh grads, don’t bother to look at jobs for experienced engineers with the PSCs, you won’t find them. And don’t be picky in this time of crisis. I say that it will be 6-8 months before the industry hits rock bottom. Maybe Omar will be a Director of PETRONAS by then…

  56. Nor Says:

    Helo Wata,

From that onwards I have been trying to get back the job in HSE but the reasons for rejection is either my experience is less or Im a woman. Can u help me to find one?

    • Wata Says:

Nor: I don’t have contacts in HSE. What are your qualifications, maybe someone will read and respond.

  57. Nor Says:

  64. Adam Banks Says:

    Wata

I must say I like your style; most enjoyable reading compared to most industry focused websites. Here’s a question for you though. Outside of yourself, Petronas and the government, who would say you are most influential and prominent Malaysian nationals within the operators right now?

    Would love your opinion.

    Best

    Adam Banks

    • Wata Says:

Adam Banks: thanks for the support. As to the most influential Malaysians in the oil & gas industry other than the above categories, I really don’t know. From the supplier standpoint, it would be who controls the largest purse. The CEOs of most, if not all of the production sharing contractors are of overseas vintage. I would say that the local CEOs of GLC (or Politically Linked Companies) would be the most influential.

And to us small fry, the procurement department heads would be once we would most like to, put it mildly, influence. BTW, any MACC officers who read this, please wipe your feet before entering my premises.

On another note, your web link goes nowhere.

      • Adam Banks Says:

        Wata

Try that one (web link amended).

It’s interesting indeed, and especially in countries where a PSC grip is held on natural resources. I get the feeling that Esso’s fall from grace, although linked certainly to their reliance on natural gas production, most certainly would have coincided with the departure of a couple of key individuals who were “in like Flynn” with Petronas. Shell holds the cards now, but surely it can’t be a party for two.

Procurement. How hard can it be to reply to every tender “we have surveyed the market, and believe the realistic fee level should be 50% less. Please amend your proposal and resend to us within 19 seconds.”

  66. Sham Says:

    need your advice.
PSV sized for fire is a requirement for any unfired pressure vesssel that is design to ASME VII DIV 1?
If this a requirement, deviation from the code will not get the pressure vessel to be U stamp.

    • Wata Says:

Sham: don’t know about ASME VII, I usually work with ASME VIII. Anyhow, I haven’t seen an ASME VIII calculation that includes mention of the PSV. I’m a process engineer, so what I do is size the PSV according to API 521.

Isn’t the U or R stamp awarded to a fabrication yard, which has the mandate to fabricate ASME U compliant vessels. Could you share which yard is not fabricating vessels according their mandate, and I’ll let the insurance companies know?

  67. ANN Says:

Wata, Last year I did ask you about opportunity to work with the oil and gas company. I came from the background of Maritime/Marine Civil and Geotechnical Engineering with 8 years of experience. 69. Jada Says:

    Sir,
It’s a great spending time exploring this blog. It’s an open eye for career path seeker especially those from engineering field.Your career path is like an ideal path for a chemical engineer, is it by luck,by chance or planned?

    Sir,
One with chemical engineering background started as a process engineer in upstream (offshore)operations. His primary task is to led the brown field projects, facilities improvement as well performing the daily troublehsooting job. After 5 years in that job, he sense that his learning curve start to be horizon and somehow his energy depleted rapidly-maybe due to same job, same location, almost same bos and colleagues all this while, or may be due to ‘push factor’ from his current organization.

Based on your experience and judgement, where should he climb next to top up his skill, knowledge and experience? He has options in hand either to be an operation supervisor at offshore, pursue master in Process Engineering at Crandfield University,U.K, involve in green field design office or stay there as he is now…?
Which is the best option should he pick to make him as a competent engineer in making like you?
    Please advice sir.
i believe your advice will surely benefit others as well.

    Thank you.

    • Jabbathehutt Says:

Join a company that provides a broader scope of work. I believe the person is working for a smaller contracter doing small modification work.

Try working for a bigger multinational company (like Worley, SBM, Technip etc). They would have much bigger job with opportunity for exposure.

Alternatively, work for a contractor, which will give you a multidsscipline overview, which is priceless (someone like Mcdermott, KBR etc).

getting a masters would not help much

If not, join someone which does very specialist stuff, like synergy. they do flow assurance (and the only other real competitor is trident), OTS (one other competitor) and small oddities, although i like to consider the people there are not odd.

  75. Mat Says:

    Hi Wata,

Appreciate your effort in putting up this blog especially the posts regarding job opporunities.

I need your advice on a career path dilemma i’m facing right now. I’m a rotating equipment engineer working for a french engineering firm for almost 2 years now. It’s a good company but i find that site exposure especially offshore is hard to come by. (none yet to be exact!)

Going offshore is one of the main reason joined O&G. Should i stay? heard that rotating equipment eng won’t do too bad in future. Or should i try some offshore installtion firm?

Sorry, not sure if its related to yr area of concern though but appreciate any advice given.

    • Wata Says:

Mat: Not knowing what company you work for (I am assuming you are working with turbine generators), I give general pointers: 1. If you want to stay where you are, ask to move to maintenance / client support. If your comp sells to O&G offshore, I would bet that they also supply maintenance contracts as well. 2. Move to a rot machinery company that you know has maintenance contracts. For example, pump maintenance is usually done by in-house teams. 3. Apply to O&G operators as opns support. I guarantee that after a while, you will wonder why you wanted to go offshore.

      • Mat Says:

Working for a consultant, Technip actually. It’s a headache to design specifications for pumps/compressors when you have not even seen one operating at site. I would definitely take points 2 & 3 into serious consideration. Thanks!
Btw, perhaps some specific pointers now that you know where i work?

    • JabbatheHutt Says:

Let me explain, for a minute, assume you are the boss of an O&G company, or an instrumentation dept head,

      Who would you take;

      1. Local Malaysian Graduate from UK, US asking for RM1500 wanting to work hard for you? They are fresh, easy to mould, and listens to what you want.

      2. Foreign (Philippine) Technician from manufacturing industry asking for xxx (obviously not RM1500), expect the company to pay RM2500 for a work permit application, and be an entry level engineer?

  97. Wata Says:

Hello, Alan. I didn’t know that a whole bunch of you moved of to pastures green (or colder/hotter, depending where you are now). The Malaysian O&G sector’s slowed down, so I don’t think that the expat community is going to increase in size, at least not till 2H2010.

  98. Wata Says:

  99. Wata Says:
